Overview
Chinese mistletoe (Taxillus chinensis, sometimes Loranthus parasiticus), a hemi-parasitic plant that grows on the branches of host trees — ideally the mulberry (Sang), hence its name 桑寄生, “the mulberry’s tenant”.
Harvested at the end of spring or in summer, dried in sections of stems and leaves, it gives off a mild vegetal scent.
The modern pharmacopoeia distinguishes the grades by host tree, mistletoe on mulberry being historically the most sought after.
