Overview

Chinese mistletoe (Taxillus chinensis, sometimes Loranthus parasiticus), a hemi-parasitic plant that grows on the branches of host trees — ideally the mulberry (Sang), hence its name 桑寄生, “the mulberry’s tenant”.

Harvested at the end of spring or in summer, dried in sections of stems and leaves, it gives off a mild vegetal scent.

The modern pharmacopoeia distinguishes the grades by host tree, mistletoe on mulberry being historically the most sought after.

Traditional uses

The reference herb of the Wood and Water Phase registers in their dimension of the frame (Jin Gu) and of the harmony of the Blood’s rhythms.

Traditionally used for constitutions of deficient Yin and Blood with weakened lower foundations and a frame (Jin Gu) tried by age, particularly when Wind-Dampness comes to settle there.

Preparation and traditional-use quantity
  • Decoction: 9 to 15 g, simmer for 30 minutes
  • Du Huo Ji Sheng Tang: a classic blend with Du Huo, for older constitutions with Wind-Dampness-Cold and weak foundations
  • Extended use: a tradition of use over 1 to 3 months for the frame (Jin Gu)
Precautions

Suits most constitutions.
