Overview

The fleshy root of Millettia speciosa, a climbing plant of the tropical regions of southern China (Guangdong, Guangxi).

Its name Niu Da Li means “great strength of the ox” — a telling image of the standing usage gives it.

Lifted all year round, cut into cream-white to pale yellow slices, it gives off a characteristic mild, milky scent, faintly sweet.

A leading plant of the folk pharmacopoeia of the south, present in the sustaining family broths of Canton (Tang Shui Bao).

Traditional uses

A herb of the popular Cantonese pharmacopoeia, of the mild Qi supplementing register, moistening the Metal Phase and loosening the frame (Jin Gu) of aged or weakened constitutions.

Traditionally used in family soups of the supplementing register, for constitutions of deficient Qi with moderate dryness of the breath.

Less present in the classical repertoires of the north, but unavoidable in the supplementing cookery of the south.

Preparation and traditional-use quantity
  • Supplementing soups (Tang Shui Bao): 30 to 60 g in a family soup simmered for 2 hours, with pork or chicken — an everyday Cantonese use
  • Decoction: 15 to 30 g, simmer for 30 to 45 minutes
  • Steeped liquor: slices steeped in grain spirit, 3 months minimum
Precautions

A very mild herb. To be used in moderation in cases of marked stagnation (its sweetness can feed constitutions of thick Dampness).
