Overview
The young shoots of Artemisia capillaris or Artemisia scoparia, thread-leaved wormwoods of the temperate regions of China.
Picked in spring while the leaves are still tender and downy (older shoots are not kept), dried in the shade, they come as very fine greyish-green tufts giving off a discreet aromatic scent.
To be strictly distinguished from Ai Ye (the other wormwood of the Chinese pharmacopoeia): Ai Ye warms and holds the Blood, Yin Chen Hao clears the Heat-Dampness of Wood (coupled).
Traditional uses
The reference herb for clearing the heat-Dampness settled in the Wood Phase (coupled) when it shows at the surface as a persistent yellowish hue.
Present in the foremost blend Yin Chen Hao Tang of Zhang Zhongjing.
Preparation and traditional-use quantity
- Decoction: 9 to 30 g (quantities readily go high), simmer for 25 to 30 minutes
- Yin Chen Hao Tang: “decoction of Yin Chen Hao”, a classic blend of Zhang Zhongjing with Zhi Zi and Da Huang, for constitutions of marked Wood Heat-Dampness
- Distinction from Ai Ye: Ai Ye (Artemisia argyi): Warm, warming; Yin Chen Hao (A. capillaris): Cool, clearing Heat-Dampness — not to be confused
Precautions
To be avoided in cases of deficient Yang with deep cold. For constitutions with marked yellowish colouring, asking a practitioner for advice is essential.
