Overview
The wild chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum indicum), smaller and yellower than its cultivated cousin, grows of its own accord in the hills of China.
More bitter, more pungent, more assertive: it is the “clearing” form of the chrysanthemum, to be distinguished from the mild Ju Hua intended for the infusion of pleasure.
Traditional uses
The reference herb for neutralising gatherings of Heat-poison. Traditionally used for constitutions where Heat shows itself markedly at the surface and in the upper sphere.
Frank in profile, it is less meant for the daily infusion taken for pleasure.
Preparation and traditional-use quantity
- Decoction: 9 to 15 g, simmer for 15 to 20 minutes
- External use: a concentrated infusion, used by the tradition as a mouthwash or as a compress
- Distinction in use: kept for settings of settled Heat, unlike Ju Hua, which lends itself to daily infusion
Precautions
To be avoided in cases of deficient Yang or of loose stools. A pronounced bitter flavour: soften it if need be with a little liquorice (Gan Cao) in the blend.
