Overview
The fruits of Forsythia suspensa, that bush with brilliant yellow flowers which announces spring in Asia, are harvested at two moments: green in summer (Qing Qiao, more assertive) or ripe and brown in autumn (Lao Qiao, milder).
Dried, they open into two valves that recall a small hollow heart.
Traditional uses
The indispensable companion of Jin Yin Hua in the surface blends set against heat.
Traditionally used to neutralise toxic accumulations, to absorb what knots at the surface (“the seed of dispersal”), and to clear the heat that stirs the Spirit.
Preparation and traditional-use quantity
- Decoction: 6 to 15 g, simmer for 25 minutes
- Yin Qiao San: a classic pairing with Jin Yin Hua, the base of the cooling surface blend
- External use: a concentrated infusion for gargles or compresses
Precautions
To be avoided in cases of deficient Yang or of constitutions of deep cold. Keep to the quantities indicated.
