Overview
The aerial part of Centella asiatica, a creeping plant of the damp tropical and subtropical zones of Asia, known as “gotu kola” in India and widely used in the Ayurvedic tradition.
Its heart-shaped leaves, like small coins, and its fine stems form mats on damp ground.
Cut several times in the year, dried in the shade, it keeps its green leaves and its fresh vegetal scent.
At the meeting point of several traditions: Chinese, Ayurvedic, Sri Lankan.
Traditional uses
The reference herb for clearing heat, freeing Dampness and neutralising toxic accumulations.
Traditionally used for constitutions of heat-Dampness with a yellowish hue or accumulations on the skin.
The Ayurvedic tradition, for its part, attaches it to the clarity of the Spirit (Shen).
Preparation and traditional-use quantity
- Decoction: 9 to 15 g, simmer for 25 minutes
- Infusion: 1 tablespoon per cup, water at a simmer, 10 minutes
- External use: a concentrated infusion or a cooled decoction as a compress, as the old usage has it
- The Ayurvedic tradition: “Brahmi”, used for clarity of mind (to be distinguished from Bacopa monnieri, also sometimes called Brahmi)
Precautions
To be avoided in cases of deficient Yang with deep cold. To be used with care if you are taking medication: ask a practitioner for advice.
