Overview
Ju Hong denotes the outer, orange-red layer alone of the mandarin peel, parted from the inner white layer (which forms the Ju Bai).
This traditional cut follows a fine logic: the coloured layer holds the pungent aromatic essential oils, turned more towards the breath and the Phlegm than towards transformation (Yun Hua).
Presented as fine petals of an intense orange-red, Ju Hong gives off a scent sharper and more penetrating than that of whole Chen Pi.
Traditional uses
Distinct from Chen Pi by its more marked turn towards the Phase and the transformation of thick Phlegm in the upper region.
Traditionally used when Phlegm-Dampness clogs the breath more than it clogs transformation (Yun Hua), or when a more pungent and more moving action is wanted than standard Chen Pi gives.
Preparation and traditional-use quantity
- Decoction: 3 to 9 g, simmer for 20 minutes
- Infusion for the breath: a few petals in a cup of water at a simmer, 10 minutes — valued in the cold damp season
- Distinction from Chen Pi: Ju Hong (the red layer): turned towards Metal and Phlegm; Chen Pi (the whole peel): turned towards Earth and transformation
Precautions
More pungent and more drying than Chen Pi: to be used with care in cases of deficient with dryness, of settled heat, or of dry, disturbed breath.
