Overview

The Shi Quan Da Bu Tang (“Decoction of the Ten Treasures that Supplement Completely”) is the reference blend of the Bu family, the one that gathers its four registers at once — Qi, Blood, Yang and Yin, the four fundamental vital dimensions.

Its composition joins the Four Gentlemen (Ren Shen, Bai Zhu, Fu Ling, Gan Cao — Bu Qi register of the Qi) to the Four Substances (Dang Gui, Bai Shao, Shu Di Huang, Chuan Xiong — Bu Xue register of the Blood), plus two additions: Huang Qi (Bu Qi register of the surface Qi) and Rou Gui (Bu Yang register of the deep Yang).

Ten herbs covering the whole spread of the Bu registers — hence the name “Ten Treasures” (Shi Quan). A major blend for constitutions under rebuilding.

Traditional uses

The reference blend for deeply weakened constitutions joining deficiencies of the Qi, of the Blood and of the Yang.

Traditionally used for constitutions under rebuilding after trying spells, or for aged constitutions where the Qi and the Blood weaken.

A powerful blend, to be taken under a practitioner’s supervision so that it fits the constitution.

Preparation and traditional-use quantity
  • Traditional preparation: 1 sachet in 500 ml of water, simmer for 25 to 30 minutes, strain and drink in 2 servings over the day
  • Background use: 1 sachet a day for 3 to 4 weeks, to be repeated after a practitioner’s advice
  • The cold season: a tradition of use in autumn and winter, for weakened constitutions
Precautions

A powerful supplementing blend: to be avoided in cases of settled heat, of markedly deficient Yin with empty heat, or of marked stagnation. Asking a practitioner for advice is essential.
