Overview

The Du Huo Ji Sheng Tang (“Decoction of Pubescent Angelica and Chinese Mistletoe”) is one of the most celebrated blends of the classical Chinese pharmacopoeia, attributed to Sun Si Miao (581-682, Tang dynasty) in his treatise Qian Jin Yao Fang.

Traditionally composed of 14 carefully matched herbs (among them Du Huo, Sang Ji Sheng, Niu Xi, Du Zhong, Qin Jiao, Fang Feng, Dang Gui, Bai Shao, Chuan Xiong, Sheng Di Huang, Ren Shen, Fu Ling, Gan Cao, Rou Gui), it is a classical reference of the Qu Feng Shi (祛风湿) register.

Presented in individual sachets, to make modern use easier of a classical blend that traditionally called for a long decoction.

Traditional uses

The classical reference blend for aged or weakened constitutions, when Wind-Dampness-Cold reaches the frame (Jin Gu), particularly when it settles there over time and comes with a deficiency of the foundations (the Wood and Water Phases).

It works along three lines at once: driving out Wind-Dampness-Cold, supplementing the weakened foundations, and freeing the passage through the meridians.

Preparation and traditional-use quantity
  • Traditional preparation: 1 sachet in 500 ml of water, simmer for 25 to 30 minutes, strain and drink in 2 servings over the day
  • Classic use: 1 sachet a day for 2 to 4 weeks, to be repeated as it feels right, after a practitioner’s advice
  • A blend of Sun Si Miao: a thousand-year-old tradition (the Tang dynasty) — one of the blends most used for older constitutions
Precautions

To be used with care in cases of settled heat, of markedly deficient Yin, or if you are taking medication.

Ask a practitioner for advice so it can be matched to your own constitution — a classical blend gains from being tailored.
