Overview

Fang Feng means literally “screen against Wind”. This branched root, with its yellow-brown bark and pale heart, grows naturally in the northern regions of China.

Lifted in spring or in autumn of its second or third year, it gives off a mild, earthy scent.

It is one of the most versatile plants for dispersing Wind in all its forms.

Traditional uses

Traditionally used for constitutions where Wind settles in with Dampness and wandering discomforts.

Particularly precious in the blends that guard the Wei Qi, the defensive energy of the surface that runs just beneath the skin and forms the body’s first barrier against outside attacks.

Preparation and traditional-use quantity
  • Decoction: 4 to 9 g, simmer for 20 to 25 minutes
  • Yu Ping Feng San: a classic blend joining Fang Feng to Huang Qi and Bai Zhu, traditionally attached to the Wei Qi
Precautions

To be avoided in cases of deficient Yin with empty heat or of trembling linked to deep emptiness.

Otherwise compatible with most constitutions.
