Overview

Hedyotis diffusa, whose Chinese name means “white-flowered snake tongue” in reference to the narrow, lance-shaped form of its leaves, is a modest herb that grows in mats in the damp zones of southern China.

Harvested in summer when it flowers, dried whole, it comes as finely branched tufts.

Traditional uses

A herb much used in the modern Chinese pharmacopoeia to neutralise deep toxic accumulations and as a companion to constitutions of prolonged heat.

Much studied in contemporary research. Traditionally used as well for constitutions of heat-Dampness in the lower part of the body.

Preparation and traditional-use quantity
  • Decoction: 15 to 60 g (high quantities are typical for this herb), simmer for 25 to 30 minutes
  • In a blend: often paired with Ban Zhi Lian, Tu Fu Ling and Pu Gong Ying for long-standing constitutions
Precautions

To be avoided in cases of deficient Yang with deep cold.
